Keatings Claims More Gold

Britain's Daniel Keatings won two golds and one bronze in event finals

Keatings, who led Great Britain to a surprise victory Friday in the team competition, won gold medals on pommel horse and parallel bars in the event finals.

"I am way over the moon!" said Keatings, who turned 18 on Jan. 4. "Four gold medals — my favorite has to be the pommels. Everyone expected me to win, which brought some pressure, so I am happy I went through so well. I felt a big responsibility as captain to help the younger boys to settle and perform well, and they really delivered the result."

Greece's Eleftherios Kosmidis, who turned 17 Tuesday, won the floor exercise title (tucked double-double mount) over Spain's Christian Bazan and Keatings.

Bazan — one day older than Keatings — was the most successful gymnast of the day with four medals. In addition to the floor silver, he won the gold on rings and bronze medals on vault and parallel bars.

France's Mathieu Jordan won vault, and Amin Garibov gave Russia its only gold of the junior competition with the high bar title. Russia was the most successful nation of the day with six medals from four gymnasts.

Keatings' four gold medals mark the most successul competition result for a British gymnast in history. He is favored to win one of Britain's two qualification spots to the Olympics in August. His clubmate Louis Smith is favored to earn the other spot.

"Daniel has shown he is not simply a specialist, he is a great all-arounder!" said his personal coach, Paul Hall. "From here everything is about the Olympic Games, Grand Prix in Moscow and Barcelona, and then the final finishing touches and lots of confidence for Beijing. And my hope for Huntingdon Olympic Gym Club is for Daniel, Louis and Marissa [King] to represent Great Britain in Beijing!"
