British Juniors Stun Europe
Daniel Keatings, 2008 Junior European championGreat Britain defeated Russia by more than two points. Germany, the defending champion from 2006, finished third ahead of the host Swiss. Ukraine, second to Great Britain at the halfway point, fell to fifth.
The title — the best international result by a British team in history — comes as London prepares to play host to the 2009 Worlds and 2012 Olympic Games.
"This is the greatest team Britain has ever assembled!" said Trevor Low, chairman of the British Gymnastics Men's Technical Committee. "This is a team for London 2012. The work and commitment of the gymnasts and their personal coaches has allowed British Gymnastics to help them toward this European title."
Britain's Daniel Keatings and Daniel Purvis finished first and second in the all-around. The British nabbed eight spots to Sunday's finals, with Keatings the top qualifier on pommel horse and Theo Seager the top qualifier on vault.
"The boys delivered!" said Paul Hall, Keatings' personal coach. "At every stage they met each target and showed a committment and a belief in themselves that I have never seen in a British team before."
Keatings, 18, has already had success as a senior. He won the silver medal on pommel horse at the 2007 European Championships, and finished seventh on the event at the 2007 Worlds.
In another historic finish, Gustavo Simoes won the all-around bronze for Portugal.
Competition continues Saturday with the senior team final.
