Russians Rule Qualification at Men's European Championships
Nikolai Kryukov (Russia) was the top qualifier on pommel horse and parallel barsLed by veteran Nikolai Kryukov and 2007 European all-around champion Maxim Devyatovsky, Russia outscored second-place Germany by more than five points. Ukraine was third, .0975 behind Germany.
Kryukov, 29, was the top qualifier on pommel horse and parallel bars and teammate Anton Golutsutskov was the top qualifier on floor exercise. Golutsutskov earned the highest individiual score of the day with a 16.550 on vault, and his two-vault average was second behind world champon Leszek Blanik (Poland).
Devyatovsky competed all six events and was the top individual, though the all-around will not be contested in Lausanne.
Romania, missing superstar Marian Dragulescu, qualified fourth ahead of Belarus and Switzerland. France and Italy rounded out the teams qualifying to Saturday's final.
Dutch star Yuri van Gelder topped Bulgarian veteran Jordan Jovtchev for first on still rings. Germany's Fabian Hambüchen, the reigining world and European champion on high bar, was the top qualifier on that event.
Competition continues Friday with the junior competition. Germany is the defending team champion, having upset Russia at the 2006 Junior European Championships in Volos, Greece.
