World Cup Begins in Maribor

Competition began Friday at the 41st Salamunov Memorial, a World Cup event in Maribor, Slovenia.

The qualification competition featured gymnasts from more than 30 countries, including Canada, China, France, Germany, North Korea, Ukraine and the U.S.

Slovenian stars Mitja Petkovsek and Aljaz Pegan both placed third on their respective strengths, the parallel bars and the high bar.

The top men's qualifiers were Ukraine's Yevgeny Bogonsyuk on floor exercise, China's Zhong Hongtao on pommel horse, France's Danny Rodrigues on still rings, Switzerland's Patrick Dominguez on vault, China's Wang Guanyin on parallel bars and Austria's Marco Baldauf on high bar.

The top women's qualifiers were Great Britain's Marissa King on vault, North Korea's Yong Hwa Cha on uneven bars, and the Netherlands' Sanne Wevers on balance beam and Suzanne Harmes on women's floor.

Competition continues Saturday with the first day of finals.
