Sloan Top Senior At U.S. Classic

First-year senior Bridget Sloan won the senior all-around title at the U.S. Classic (a qualifying meet for the upcoming U.S. Championships), held Saturday in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Sloan, who turned 15 on June 23, finished 3.30 points ahead of another first-year senior, Christa Tanella (56.05). At the 2006 U.S. Junior Championships, Sloan did not finish the competition, and Tanella placed 14th all-around. Third in Battle Creek was Darlene Hill (56.00).

Several U.S. team veterans competed on fewer than four events, including 2006 world all-around silver medalist Jana Bieger, 2005 world all-around champion Chellsie Memmel, 2005 world floor exercise champion Alicia Sacramone and 2006 world team silver medalist Natasha Kelley. Sacramone, the only gymnast to perform two separate vaults, won vault, balance beam and floor exercise.

In the junior division, Rheagan Courville (Elite Gymnastics, Louisiana) scored 56.60 to defeat All Olympia's Samantha Shapiro (pictured at left) by 0.10. At the 2006 U.S. Junior Championships, Shapiro was 13th all-around but Courville did not finish the competition.

Third was All Olympia's Mattie Larson, who did not compete at the 2006 U.S. Junior Championships because of injury. Fourth was Olivia Courtney, who finished 18th at the 2007 U.S. Junior Championships.
