"White Palms" to Play at MOMA

The award-winning Hungarian-produced gymnastics film "Fehér Tenyér" ("White Palms") is playing June 20-25 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.

Written and directed by Hungarian Szabolcs Hajdu, "White Palms" is based on the real-life experiences of Hajdu and his younger brother, Zoltan Miklos Hajdu. It also stars 2004 Olympic gold medalist Kyle Shewfelt, who plays a tempermental Canadian gymnast.

At the 2006 Hungarian Film Week festival, "White Palms" earned five awards, including Best Director and Best Producer, as well as the Gene Moskowitz Critics' Prize. It also played to critical acclaim at numerous international film festivals in 2006, including in Cannes and Toronto.

"With its wordless observations of the strenuous and balletic exercises of gymnasts and its examination of shame as an element of training, White Palms is realistic, unromantic, and a different kind of sports film," according to MoMA's Web site's description of the film.
